<p>I get up late on a Sunday morning, feed the birds, pour coffee and flop into my big chair to sip my last cup of coffee while eating breakfast from a dish balanced on what had once been my rib cage in front of the TV. And there they are… perfect little hard bodied young women with figures I never imagined I could possess even in my wildest fantasies. And I look down at the old bathrobe covering the midriff bulge and belly that shakes like jelly and… well, suddenly the day does not seem as wonderful as it had just a few minutes before. Damn!

When Blondie went to her doctor to cross the Rainbow Bridge, her vet brought a homemade scone in for her and I got to feed it to her as we prepped her and her medicine for the final journey. She went out in mid-chew with a mouthful of food and a roomful of love. It’s the way I want to go… the food perhaps even more than the love.

<p>How is it that I can mix a small pill into a delightful mash of sweet potatoes, canned (wholly organic, of course) dog food and fresh strips of turkey breast and find, after my dog had slurped it up like it was the last meal she’d ever be fed, that pill in pristine condition at the bottom of the bowl? How the hell do dogs do that?

<p> <blockquote><p>It’s simply amazing that all these many years later I find out my mother and father were secretly trying to wean me and my siblings from the religion that was an all encompassing part of their lives by insisting we attend college. All this time I just thought it was because they wanted a better life for their children, what used to be called the American Dream. Thank goodness Rick Santorum has corrected that obviously wrong idea.</p></blockquote>

My mother actually attended college, a rare to almost unheard of feat in her world at a time when both men and women did not necessarily even graduate from high school. My father’s mother pulled him out of school the minute he turned 14. It was the Great Depression and she needed him to bring money into the family coffers. Not that she ever admitted that was the reason for pulling him from school. No, nonna told everyone he had to leave school because the doctor said he’d go blind if he didn’t because his eyes were getting so bad from reading. So she apprenticed him to a butcher. Yep, if you’re going blind, the best career move to make is to one that involves big sharp knives.
<br />
My father got his GED when he was in his forties. He was as proud, if not prouder, of that accomplishment than any of his kids probably were about their college diplomas. And, much to no one’s surprise, he was still seeing just fine with the help of glasses when he died. That mysterious eye disease never did rear its ugly head again.
<br />
My mother, on the other hand, was the youngest girl in her family and much doted on. Her father, upon emigrating from Italy, had done manual labor at a woman’s college located in a very snooty section of Philadelphia. The family legend my mother repeated to me with great frequency as I grew up was that he swore that one day a child of his would attend that college. That was how he’d know he’d made it in America.
<br />
It was an immigrant’s dream and my mother made it come true for him. Even though, as she admitted to me once, one of her older sisters was smarter, she was the chosen one. So her older sister went to work behind the counter in her dad’s grocery store and my mother got a college degree.
<br />
Despite her education, my mother spent most of her life behind the counter of our grocery store, working side by side with my dad. When my siblings and I grew up, the mantra in our family was that we were going to college, no questions asked, no excuses accepted. We were going to be the generation that moved from blue collar to white collar. That was the signal that our family had truly arrived in America. Italian immigrants who could go back for generations in Italy and find only illiterate farmers had come to America and in two generations risen to the ranks of doctors, lawyers, bankers and teachers. America was truly a great country.
<br />
Rick Santorum’s family is also a family of Italian immigrants. Rick earned a college degree, an MBA and a law degree. He managed to do all that ostensibly without losing his religion or becoming a snob. So I find it interesting that he wants to save us from those terrible fates by having us avoid higher education. Unfortunately for America, if our young people are not educated beyond a high school diploma, we’ll soon find ourselves confined to assembling the inventions other countries create. That’s not the way to regain America’s leading role in today’s world. Whether it’s technical training or a PhD, something beyond high school is a requirement for tomorrow’s workforce.
<br />
As our world becomes more complicated and technologically challenging, Rick would have us believe that NOT getting an education is the answer. Or – and I’m just throwing this out there for discussion – maybe now that he has his, he doesn’t want you to have yours so that he can be assured of always having a group of ignorant people who will believe every idiotic thing that comes out of his mouth.
<br />
If you would do one thing for your country this year, do this. Annoy Rick Santorum. Get an education.

<p>As I sit here watching Blondie struggle with cancer, knowing there is nothing I can do but make her comfortable until she has to make the crossing over the Rainbow Bridge, I find myself wondering where parents find the strength to sit with a dying child, knowing there is nothing they can do to escape the sad ending. What courage they must have. I don’t think I could ever do that.

<p>A friend of my was concerned about a sick relative who was losing her house to an upside down mortgage problem who couldn’t even find out who owned her mortgage. And all I could think was that this friend’s relative should just relax because the Republican presidential nominees are taking care of all her spiritual and moral needs so that she won’t have to worry about the only home that really counts - the one in heaven. Until then, she should feel perfectly content living on the streets of this world knowing that her needs in the next have been handled.

<p>An unknown someone has been sneaking lawn ornaments onto my sister’s lawn in an attempt to get her laughing during a particularly fun moment in her career. So far we have a dog, a pig and a rabbit.

<p> <blockquote><p>Most Americans look askance at the imposition of Shari’a law in many middle Eastern countries. Yet they don’t act very concerned at attempts being made in America to enact conservative Christian morality as the law of our land. Whether it’s Rick Santorum trying to keep birth control from women because it is against his religious beliefs or Newt Gingrich urging a constitutional amendment to keep marriage sacred as defined by his three sacred unions, we are skating dangerously close to a religious reign in America. </p></blockquote>
<p>
It doesn’t matter if you call them priests, ministers or ayatollahs, religion ends up trumping civil law. Anyone not following those religious standards risks losing his or her right to think or act differently.
<br />
Our constitution was carefully crafted to keep religion and government separate based on the persecutions our forefathers endured for their beliefs. They felt the safest way to keep that from happening in America was to create a big wall between the two. Who’d have thought that 200 years later, it would be our government needing protection from religious zealots who not only want the right to believe as they chose, but want to make sure that your right to believe as you choose is totally proscribed by what their religion allows.
<br />
Does your faith allow the concept of family planning as a legal, viable choice with no spiritual drawbacks? Too bad. Rick Santorum’s religion does not believe in that and he doesn’t particularly care that the constitution was set up to protect everyone’s beliefs. When he becomes president, he will do his best to see that you never have access to birth control unless you are rich enough to pay personally for it. Not to worry, though. Viagra will still be covered by insurance because it is clearly needed to assist men through a difficult medical condition.
<br />
The first presidential election I remember was in 1960. John Kennedy versus Richard Nixon. Young, good-looking cool guy versus jowly, sweaty man barely comfortable in his own skin. Being Catholic was a definite disadvantage for Kennedy. So at one point he gave a speech in which he basically promised that his election would not mean the pope ruling America. He promised to keep his civic and religious life separate. He has got to be turning in his grave as this election season progresses, seemingly based on which candidate can out-Christian the other candidate.
<br />
Poor Mitt. Being Mormon has never been easy in this country, especially when most conservative Christians do not believe Mormons are Christian. Now that Catholicism has been accepted into Christianity’s fold, the Mormons stand out even more as the round peg trying to squeeze into the square hole.
<br />
Nixon’s religion was not as much of an issue in the 1960 campaign as his five o’clock shadow. I’m pretty sure most people would probably not have been able to tell you what his religion was as they went to the polling booth. He felt no need to either explain or defend his religion and certainly made no promise to rule as a Christian.
<br />
Back then, Americans were still pretty wary of people who used their religion to proclaim their goodness and righteousness, as though without it they had no moral compass. Most Americans felt that the constitution provided the compass for our nation and it didn’t need the help of anyone’s priest or rabbi or imam to justify the laws that flowed from it.
<br />
Now we are in the middle of a battle for what seems to be the soul of the Republican party and the main issue is apparently who goes to church and prays most. Given the state of our economy, the continued existence of Guantanamo Bay, and the ongoing struggles of the middle class to cling to its place in society, you’d think these candidates would have something better to discuss than which one of them more opposes a woman’s right to choose than the other. But they seem so bereft of new ideas, better plans, and viable alternatives, that all they can do is turn to their faith and proclaim that being more Christian than the next candidate is the only credential they need for your vote.
<br />
The Republicans are seemingly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. I thought only the Democrats did that.
