Over the past year Girls for A Change has partnered with Jennifer Siebel Newsom in creating and leading the social action component of her award winning documentary Miss Representation. As part of the Social Action Rep. program, we created a campaign called "Not Buying It," which encourages people to use the Twitter hashtag #NotBuyingIt to call out sexist and degrading representations of women in the media, especially in commercials and print advertisements. Respected independent news organization Mother Jones has picked up the story and reports on the popularity of #NotBuyingIt during this year's Super Bowl.<br />

<p>The 2nd Annual Girl Gala was a huge success, raising over $45,000 for after-school programming. Guests included GFC Partners Julia Landauer, Nascar Driver and Katie Sullivan, NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Racer, as well as girls from the GFC program at the Akilah Institute in Kigali, Rwanda. Over 120 guests joined together in celebration of GFC programming at the Saratoga Country Club in October 2011. <p>Be a Girl Action Team Coach in Santa Clara, San Mateo, or South Santa Cruz County!<br />
<br />
Each year we reach out to community members like you to support the girls as they create social change. Our biggest need is to fill the volunteer role of our Girl Action Team Coaches. Coaching with GFC means working with girls for 14 weeks to tell them they are important and powerful and that they can create change. The commitment is approximately <strong>20 hours per month</strong> and includes <strong>one and a half hour meeting with the girls each week. Spring session is mid January to May.</strong> We offer Coach training, staff support and a coach manual to help guide you during the year. We provide the support you need to work effectively with girls in communities throughout the Silicon Valley. <br />

<li>Complete a GFC Coach application and a Coach interview, receive orientation packet and be fingerprinted.</li>
<li>January 14th from 9a-5p and January 15th from 9a-1p – Attend Coach orientation (mandatory for all volunteers).</li>
<li>January to May – Meet once per week with your Girl Action Team.</li>
<li>May - Completion and Celebration with your Girl Action Team!</li>
