My introduction to bird carving was in 1984 when I spent three months in Holland, Michigan. While wandering through an art gallery I saw a carving of a miniature hen mallard. I have never seen anything like that made out of wood and at that point, I knew that I wanted to be a carver. Upon returning home (Missoula, Montana), I bought a book on decoy carving, grabbed an old Doug Fir 2x4, found my dull carpenters chisel and went to town. I still have that smooth bodied Scaup, and I still remember that stud grade lumber is not the best carving wood.

While working in Portland, I purchased the book: WATERFOWL CARVING, BLUE RIBBON TECHNIQUES, and discovered basswood and real carving tools. My first decorative carving went to my daughter. I took my second bird to work and immediately sold it. From that time on, I have been able to consistently sell my carvings.

My work also required that I spend the next decade moving around the West. During that time, I was lucky enough to expand my skills by taking classes from such artists as Ted Smith, Dave Alexander, and Tom Matus.

I have sold carvings to collectors and companies throughout the world. I currently carve a Bald Eagle for the Mulrooney Award which is presented annually by the North American Wholesale Lumber Association and I carve the service awards for the Pacific Logging Congress. My work has been purchased by several corporations as service awards and customer gifts and acclaimed in company journals of several Fortune 500 Companies. My carvings have been sold through art galleries in Boise, Denver, East Glacier Park, Bigfork, and Coeur d'Alene, purchased by collectors in The U.S., Canada, Mexico, Indonesia, New Zealand, The U.K. and Japan, and an antiqued style American Advocet was ordered by a large corporation and was presented to one of Brazil's provincial Governors.

Along with carvings birds, I have branched off into different areas. I have been carving nativity sets, Christmas decorations, a few caricatures, a couple of signs and, because my exposure to John Clarke, Albert Racine, and the CMR Western Art Week, I have started carvings wildlife such as: bears, wolves, bison, and mountain goats.

I have won countless ribbons at carving competitions in the Pacific Northwest. I am a member of the Idaho Woodcarver's Guild, the Ward Foundation, and The National Wood Carvers Association. My birds have also been auctioned off in support of Ducks Unlimited, The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, The Glacier Fund, and Pre-Mo Charities which supports the MS research that is being done at the Oregon Health Science University.

Most of my carvings are sold as commissions but occasionally I do have carvings that are for immediate sale and can be seen at the See What is For Sale page on my website. If you are interested in a commission, please contact me by e-mail or snail mail and we can discuss the carving.

I work for Northwest Management, Inc and we salvage logs from the bottom of Flathead Lake, Montana. This is a video I made of pulling the logs out of the lake and converting them into lumber

I could not resist, I took some pine and larch and carved some fishing lures. The two small lures are natural colors. The two larger lures have been touched up with some green washes and iridescent powder.

What they say about us!

This site has been a great resource for me. The ease of use, wide variety of information, as well as the great layout are a refreshing change to the standard, bulky sites I have used in the past. Here I am able to find everything I need in one site, without spending hours sifting through little bits of information across the Internet. This has led to improving my own productivity, because I spend far less time searching all over the place for the content I need. I definitely see a strong future for this site and will continue to use it for my needs.
