- We would like to thank friends and customers who came for our open house this last Friday and Saturday. We had
a great time and people got some nice plants I hope.
- Besides the events scheduled on the "Orchid Shows" and "Lecture Trips" bars, we have decided
on the date for our first Open House of the year. It is going to happen on March 25-26 from 9 AM to 5 PM. More
information on the "Updates" section, under those bars.
- An update on the scheduled orchid photo tours for this year is also on the "Updates" section.
a lot of things that were waiting on the pipeline. My recent trip to Brazil didn't allow me much time to do this
until now.
- Second is that the additional Division List has also been updated with a few more large divisions. If you are
- Third is that the first photo tours for next year are being finalized and I hope to send the complete information
about them before the year ends.
I added a few pictures and comments on a one-week long trip I made with a couple of American friends last month.
They are on the "updates"section on this page, just scroll down a bit. Hope you all enjoy, that gives
an idea of the kind of stuff we'll see on these trips.
page. As in the past ten years, we have been trying to keep the width of the pages not too wide so lateral scrolling
wouldn't be needed. With this in mind, we started with 640 pixels wide and some five years ago switched to 800
pixels. As these days even the smallest LCD monitors or laptop screens are wider than 1024 pixels, we are widening
it again (in this case, to 1024 pixels wide) so more information can be seen at once. Having the news on the right
column also allow us to concentrate on more pictures and less text on the main area of the page. We are still using
the same basic layout and color scheme as, according to feedback, is clean and fairly easy on the eyes; it is also
fast loading. We might change it in the future, but at this time there are other priorities. Any suggestions are
welcome, have you all a nice day.
The main reason is that there are still several important details that have to be decided, and what I am going
to do is to make that trip by myself sometime this year to be able to see these things. I don't want my guests
to be a test group and want to make sure everything goes great. On the other hand, the trips to Minas Gerais are
confirmed for May, July, September and November. These are areas that I know like the palm of my hand and can be
sure that the experiences are going to be most enjoyable. The places we'll go are essentially the same, but time
on each varies depending on the time of the year according to the main plants in flower. As an idea, this trip

I am finishing the detailed schedules, and will post here when they are confirmed... which will be very soon.

- As mentioned in the "News" sidebar,
we made a one-week trip to Minas Gerais to see what was in flower and as preparation for next year's tours. Of
course I knew that we would see a lot in flower at this time of the year, I just didn't remember that it would
be raining a lot... I mean A LOT. But come to think of it, during Fall and Winter it gets very dry and cold at
the higher elevations so plants have to do with very little water during this time. I have been seeing the way
the plants live so to overcome these conditions, but they have to compensate for this during Spring and Summer.
The result is that we had to try to protect ourselves and our cameras a bit but it was definitely worth it. Below
are a few pictures of what we saw, essentially rupicolous laelias and other rock-growing orchids and other plants...
a good snapshot of what to expect.

We went to the Caraça Sanctuary and through
the Cipó Mountains all the way to Diamantina. As the main road from Espírito Santo to Belo Horizonte
was closed the day before due to some serious landslides, the options was to go to Belo Horizonte through Caeté.
Now, I know better than to do that, as all the highway traffic with plenty large trucks going through the narrow
streets of little Caeté would be total chaos. Mind you, this is one of the main highways in Brazil so I
feel for the truck drivers having no other option. For us in a small car though, I decided do go through the back
roads around Itabira. I have done this only once in the past, and many years ago so I forgot about a few things.
The most important one is that there are about 80 miles of dirt roads and I thought it would be ok to endure the
dust but I forgot that with all this rain our problem wouldn't be the dust... In fact, a couple of times we had
to go through areas where even trucks couldn't pass as the muddy sections were uphill. In the end, this affair
took us the best part of a day and with this we couldn't really stop for long in the Cipó. We arrived in
Diamantina at night and the next day was the really wet one. That is why we need more than a week to do this right
and really enjoy the surroundings.

many in bloom, but thinking back I remember that last time was in 2000, a fairly dry year. It is amazing what the
amount of rain can do to the plants, when there is not enough rain the plants look like halfway dead and we see
fewer in flower. But with all the rain this year they just exploded in flower... nice!

almost doubled in price, we have to increase a bit our shipping and handling charges for the first time, from US$15.00
to US$20.00. This will not be enough to cover shipping, especially on small orders, but it is a reasonable compromise.
For the same reason, the minimum order also increased from US$25.00 to US$35.00. Thanks for the understanding.
