<p>Taking advantage of commercial small form factors, like Android™ handsets and tablets, is the next step in the evolution of Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) radios.</p>
<p>Working with OIS, Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC) ported an entire JTRS-based radio application, including core framework and waveforms, to an Android handset. CRC successfully ported an AM waveform, an FM waveform and an <a target="_blank" href="http://www.apco911.org/frequency/project25.php">APCO P25</a> waveform to the Android device.</p>
<p>By using ORB<em>express</em> for Android, CRC accomplished the entire port of the complete radio system, including waveforms, in just one day, with zero source code modifications. Using ORB<i>express</i> enabled CRC to take full advantage of their previous investment in software-defined radio and reuse their unchanged code in a new hardware/software platform.</p>
<p><em>One day. Zero code changes.</em></p>
<p>The full radio system including framework and waveforms ran seamlessly while achieving long battery life on the ARM processor.</p>
<p>CRC used the ORB<em>express</em> middleware abstraction for all interprocess communications to make moving their SCA-based radio system to new form factors and new operating systems fast and easy.</p>
