In its first meeting of 2012, the RRGCC Board of Directors unanimously approved a resolution adopting Land Trust Standards and Practices and voted to submit an application to become a full member of the Land Trust Alliance. Our adoption of these Standards and Practices plus membership in the Land Trust Alliance will bring with it a number of benefits towards our goal securing and preserving in perpetuity the land on which we climb. Uma is a climber from Florence, Kentucky who has a background in accounting and works as a manager for Duke Energy. In subsequent officer elections the RRGCC’s officers for 2012 are: Paul Vidal, President; Bentley Brackett, Vice President; Uma Nanjundan, Treasurer; and Josephine Neff, Secretary. Many thanks go to our outgoing President, Rick Bost for his service and leadership. We look forward to Rick continuing to serve out the remainder of his term as a BOD member (we don’t let people off that easy, Rick).<br /><br />Another important matter taken up at the RRGCC’s February 11, 2012 meeting was the discussion of an updated Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the RRGCC and the US Forest Service, Daniel Boone National Forest (DBNF). The RRGCC first entered into an MOU with the Forest Service in February 2000 and has been cooperating with the DBNF under the terms of this MOU ever since. The updated MOU intends to improve cooperation between the two parties in regards to developing climbing management plans, encouraging the establishment of new climbing areas, and performing trail work and climbing area maintenance. After the discussion, the RRGCC authorized RRGCC Executive Director, Bill Strachan to submit the updated MOU to the Forest Service for review.

Over the past couple of years, we've listened to the Webers ask for more financial support for Muir on this website. We have watched signs go up on trails in Muir asking for donations, seen donation boxes put up in the parking area, read "Donations Needed to Keep Muir Valley Open" banners on the Muir Valley Website...yet the needed response from climbers simply hasn't been seen. <br /><br />This is going to change and we are going to make it happen. YOU are going to make it happen.<br /><br />Over the next few months, there will be growing awareness for Muir spread both far and near with fundraisers to demonstrate to the Webers that we, the climbing community, value Muir Valley and take responsibility for supporting it at an individual level. However, the big task at hand will be to guide the Webers through our response as they build the future plan for Muir.<br /><br />If what you see in your future has a Muir Valley in it, then please show your support by making a financial contribution today. Even if you don't climb much at Muir, losing Muir will affect the future of climbing at the Red River Gorge. An estimated 30,000 climbers visited Muir in 2011. With Muir gone, the PMRP and other areas will need to absorb these visiting climbers. Think about it.<br /><br />Many thanks to Climbing Magazine and all the other climbing news sites and magazines that are supporting this effort. "Wild and Woolly Video" is hosting a showing of the classic climbing film "El Capitan" on February 15th at 7 PM at the Clifton Center in Louisville (<!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.cliftoncenter.org">www.cliftoncenter.org</a><!-- w -->). <br /><br />Glen Denny, who was the cameraman on the movie and is also famous for his Yosemite climbing photos (glendenny.com) will be there to introduce the movie and do a Q&A afterwards. He'll also be doing a slideshow the following night at the Quest Outdoors on Frankfort Avenue. <br /><br />Admission is $5 or free if the person is a Friend of the Clifton Center.<br />It's a "we hope we break even" type event.
