How blessed it is to think of you as "beneath the shadow of a great rock in a weary land," safe in His strength, building on His foundation, and covered from the devourer by divine protection and affection. Always bear in mind that His presence, power, and peace meet all human needs and reflect all bliss. </p>

<p class="style19">This definition of Christian Science is taken from <u>The Source Book Encyclopedia</u> Vol. 2, 1930:
Christian Science (p. 593-594 written by Clifford P. Smith) the religion founded by Mary Baker Eddy and represented by the Church of Christ, Scientist. </p>
<p class="style19">As a religious teaching and practice distinct from that of other Christian denominations and other religions, Christian Science dates from 1866, when Mrs. Eddy felt that she had discovered the spiritual law by which Christ Jesus healed the sick. For some 20 years, she had been observing mental and spiritual causes and effects but this observation was subordinate to her study of the Bible, and she regarded her discovery as due entirely to her searching of the Scriptures. In 1875, after devoting this interval from 1866 to intensive study and practice, Mrs. Eddy published a statement of her discovery, which she had meanwhile named “Christian Science” in a book entitled <u>Science and Health</u>. That book, which she afterwards enlarged, revised and named <u>Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures</u>, became the textbook of Christian Science.</p>
<p class="style19"> Christian Science may be said to differ from other branches of the Christian religion and from other religions in the degree or extent to which it inculcates methodical and practical reliance upon God. Regarding God as the Life, Mind, Soul, Spirit of man, as “the divine Principle of all that really is” (Science and Health, page 275), regarding man as the expression or reflection of the divine Being, and regarding divine law as always available in every situation upon the basis of spiritual understanding, Christian Science presents a practice, mental but purely spiritual, which is regarded by adherents to that faith as applicable to all human needs.</p>
<p class="style19"> For Christian Science healing, Mrs. Eddy claims the following advantages: “First: That it does away with all material medicines, and recognizes the antidote for all sickness, as well as sin, in the immortal Mind; and mortal mind as the source of all the ills which befall mortals. Second: That it is more effectual than drugs, and cures when they fail, or only relieve; thus proving the superiority of metaphysics over physics. Third: A person healed by Christian Science is not only healed of his disease, but he is advanced morally and spiritually.” (Retrospection and Introspection, page 34) </p>
<p class="style19">The Church of Christ, Scientist, consists of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., which is at once a local church and the Mother Church of the entire denomination, and branches of this Church wherever there are congregations of Christian Scientists. The number of regularly organized branch churches is in excess of 2,000. The Mother Church also includes as auxiliary activities The Christian Science Benevolent Association, which maintains a large sanatorium in a suburb of Boston, the Trustees under Mrs. Eddy’s will, who publish her books, and The Christian Science Publishing Society, which issues <u>The Christian Science Monitor</u>, an international daily newspaper, besides several periodicals of a distinctly religious character. These include the <u>Christian Science Quarterly</u>, the <u>Christian Science Journal</u>, and the <u>Christian Science Sentinel</u>.
