The initial concept of URBZ was born in the mind of a restless group of urban planning students in New York in the early 2000’s. The idea was to exchange knowledge about cities, network and travel globally for events and conferences. URBZ was developed as an early and basic prototype of social networking sites such as Flickr and Facebook. After various phases of trial and development the project nearly died. It was resuscitated in Tokyo and in Mumbai by Geeta Mehta, Matias Echanove and Rahul Srivastava as participatory urban planning, architecture and research tool. The recent spread of open source web content management systems such as Drupal and Worpress made it easier to develop media rich participatory websites. www.urbz.net functions as a virtual office for projects in cities including New York, Tokyo, Mumbai, Goa and Geneva. In addition to maintaining its website and providing support to partner organizations and initiatives, URBZ members organize workshops where ideas and visions about localities are expressed and shared. URBZ believes that the encounter of local actors and global contributors unleashes new potentials at all levels.

Let’s imagine a city. Not any particular city but rather a mix of cities; a messy collage of Mumbai, Goa, Tokyo, Barcelona, Mexico City, New York, and a few others. An endlessly sprawling global village where everything is distributed evenly in “small granules or pavilions across the landscape in a continuous network”.

In typical Postmodern fashion, this city is composed of disparate architectural elements: an art-deco hotel, a tourist resort, an electronic billboard, a neon sign, a delirious cathedral, mass housing, sun-breaking office towers, and so on. These archetypes majestically come together to produce the skyline of our imaginary city. Spreading over and under, within and between, even spilling outside, the “continuous network” is everywhere. Formless more than informal, it is the glue tying urban elements together. This is what we could call the ‘Bazaar City’ – the city in its raw form.

Nearly 100 people from Koliwada, Dharavi, Mumbai, India and other countries participated to a multidisciplinary workshop that documented the unique character of Koliwada and produced alternative visions for its future. This happened at a time the Government is planning a massive redevelopment of Dharavi, a large informal settlement where anything between 500,000 and 1 million people live. The 2.2 km2 area defined as Dharavi is worth billions of dollars, due to its proximity to the new central business district of Mumbai.

Koliwada is approximately 40,000 m2 with an adult population of around 15,000 people. The population is in majority Hindu with a large Catholic community. This former fishermen village is one of oldest parts of Dharavi, with historical records pre-dating the existence of Mumbai. Many original residents are property owner and claim their right to develop the land themselves, refusing to be included in the redevelopment project of the Government.

The workshop itself was a joyous and participatory takeover of the neighbourhood. It combined the city’s historic spirit of activism with the celebratory, independent and culturally dynamic traditions that the Kolis of Mumbai have always demonstrated. The workshop builds on these impulses in the best traditions of a festive exchange with visitors, guests, strangers and locals of all shades and hues.

Throughout the world, countless urban communities are challenged by generic redevelopment plans presented as urban rationalization and modernization. While these redevelopment plans usually benefit real estate actors and financing institutions operating on a global scale, they are often threatening local social networks and economic activities. This paper argues that a conceptual vacuum allows the rhetoric and imaginary of the generic city to dominate the field of urban planning and development. The paper also questions the category ‘slum’ which needs to be investigated and transcended. The concept of the organic city is presented as an alternative to both, the generic city and the slum. Examples are drawn from the author’s own involvement with urban communities in Tokyo and Mumbai.

This paper received an honorable mention at the Urban Planet Berlin Roundtable, International Essay Competition and Workshop organized by the Irmgard Coninx Foundation, the Social Science Research Center Berlin and the Humboldt-University Berlin, 11-16 June 2008.

What they say about us!

This site has been a great resource for me. The ease of use, wide variety of information, as well as the great layout are a refreshing change to the standard, bulky sites I have used in the past. Here I am able to find everything I need in one site, without spending hours sifting through little bits of information across the Internet. This has led to improving my own productivity, because I spend far less time searching all over the place for the content I need. I definitely see a strong future for this site and will continue to use it for my needs.
